Reaching New Heights: On Climate and the Future of Aviation at the ICAO Aviation Climate Week 2025

The delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, headed by the Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Timur Tlegenov, and comprising representatives from the Civil Aviation Committee of the Ministry of Transport and the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, took part in the ICAO Aviation Climate Week 2025 in a hybrid format.

The event, titled “Reaching New Heights: Implementing a Sustainable Future for Aviation”, focused on information exchange among countries regarding achievements and current progress in environmental matters, and on preparing these topics for inclusion on the agenda of the 42nd ICAO Assembly.

Key speakers at the event included:

President of the ICAO Council, Salvatore Sciacchitano,ICAO Secretary General, Juan Carlos Salazar, Chair of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), Michael Lunter, Deputy Director of ICAO’s Environment Branch, Jane Hupe, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh,

Director General of Airports Council International (ACI World), Justin Erbacci, Permanent Representatives to ICAO, Heads of civil aviation authorities of various countries,

Representatives from financial institutions, airports, and major corporations such as Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, and Embraer, as well as professors and researchers from leading global universities and research centers.

Participants discussed major environmental challenges facing civil aviation and assessed progress in implementing ICAO’s international environmental initiatives, including LTAG, ACT-SAF, and CORSIA. Special attention was given to topics such as sustainable aviation fuel, the use of artificial intelligence in green technologies, and global efforts to combat climate change.

The mechanisms for financing decarbonization projects were also addressed, with the participation of institutions such as the EBRD, World Bank, IMF, WEF, and AIIB.

One of the key sessions focused on the “Green Airports” concept, where participants from Brazil, Japan, the UAE, and the Canadian cities of Vancouver, Toronto, and Edmonton shared their successful cases and experiences.

The ICAO Aviation Climate Week 2025 concluded with a shared commitment to deepening international cooperation, advancing toward net-zero aviation, and supporting the development of environmentally sustainable infrastructure in the industry.
