On October 19, 2026, as part of ICAO Aviation Security Week (ICAO Security Week 2026), Astana hosted a meeting of the Aviation Security Coordination Group for Central Asia and the Caucasus. The meeting was attended by representatives of the civil aviation authorities of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, with a representative of the Russian Federation participating as an observer.
Participants discussed current threats to civil aviation, including operational risks near conflict zones, threats posed by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and the detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The discussion focused on risk assessment methodologies, the enhancement of protective measures, and operational information sharing.
The meeting also addressed expanding practical cooperation among regional states, providing mutual support in preparing for and undergoing ICAO audits, resolving identified deficiencies, and implementing international aviation security standards. It was noted that such collaboration directly contributes to higher compliance rates with ICAO requirements, as reflected in the audit results of states across the region.
Participants emphasized the vital role of regional cooperation in implementing the ICAO Global Aviation Security Plan (GASeP) and outlined priorities for joint initiatives through 2027.
The outcomes of the meeting and the successful regional cooperation framework will be presented at Session 9 of ICAO Aviation Security Week, titled "Road to HLCAS/3", dedicated to preparations for the Third ICAO High-Level Conference on Aviation Security in 2027.
Holding this meeting in Astana reaffirmed the commitment of Central Asian and Caucasus states to strengthening regional collaboration and establishing aligned approaches to ensuring civil aviation security.
