11,000 km of Roads and New Air Routes: Kazakhstan Upgrades Transport Infrastructure to Boost Tourism

09/06/2026

The Government of Kazakhstan has reviewed measures aimed at modernizing transport infrastructure to support tourism development.

According to Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev, roadworks this year cover 11,000 km of public highways, including routes leading to key tourist destinations such as the Rakhmanov Springs, Kenderli, Bayanaul, Zerenda, and the Kolsai Lakes.

For example, the full completion of the Almaty – Ust-Kamenogorsk highway has already reduced travel time by 4–5 hours.

In addition, the modernization of railway stations in Kokshetau, Borovoe, Konaev, Balhash, and other cities is expected to be completed by July 1. The procurement of 191 new railcars and the launch of 15 additional seasonal routes will create more than 400,000 additional passenger seats during the summer season.

In the aviation sector, following instructions from the Head of State, construction continues on new tourist airports in Katon-Karagay, Zaisan, and Kenderli, while the Arkalyk airport is being restored and the Urzhar terminal is undergoing modernization.

"Domestic air routes play an important role in strengthening interregional connectivity. During the summer season, subsidized flights operate to key tourist destinations such as Alakol, Balkhash, Turkestan, Burabay, and the Caspian Sea. In total, 45 flights per week are operated on these routes,” the minister noted.
