Resolving travel problems

Loss of passport abroad

First, try to calm down. The calmer you will behave, the faster you will make everything necessary.

Secondly, contact the police. The police will give you a special ticket or certificate, which will be useful later.

Thirdly, contact the embassy of Kazakhstan.  This can be difficult: embassies are not in all cities and are usually located in the capitals. There is also such an option - the country may not have an embassy of Kazakhstan at all. In this case, find an embassy in the nearest country and call there: the staff will tell you what to do next.

When you get to the embassy, explain your situation and ask for a certificate of your right to return to your homeland. You will be asked to provide papers from the police, two documentary photos and identity card of a citizen of Kazakhstan - and at the same time make a notarized certified copy of the card (you can prepare it even before the trip).

In exchange for this, you will be given a certificate of the right to return to your homeland. It is valid for 14 days from the date of issue and serves as a temporary identity card - but only if you return to Kazakhstan. You can’t get on a plane to another country with that.

What to do when you get home

Do not throw out documents from the police - they will still be useful. To restore your passport (or get a new one), contact the CSC. If you say that the passport was stolen, you will not get it immediately, and after the police confirm that nothing has been found (the wait can stretch for three months).

Baggage loss

In cases of delay in the delivery of luggage, its shortage, damage (damage) or loss, as well as in the case of the issue of luggage without the presentation of a baggage receipt and a voucher baggage number tag, Property Irregularity Report shall be drawn up, signed by the person, receiving luggage and an employee of the airline or airport.

For delay in baggage delivery, the airline pays the recipient of baggage penalty in the amount of 10 percent of the cost of the air ticket for every day of delay, but not more than 50 percent of the cost of the ticket, according to the position of the actual residence of the passenger.

For loss, deficiency and/or damage to the passengers' belongings, the carrier shall compensate the amount by which the value of the belongings has been reduced if the passenger proves that the damage was caused by the fault of the carrier.

In case of loss or shortage of baggage, cargo accepted for carriage without declared value, compensation shall be paid in the amount established by the air transportation contract, if the passenger has indicated the value of baggage or cargo, Compensation shall be made in the amount of the declared value, if the baggage or cargo is damaged, in the amount by which the value of the baggage has been reduced.

Thanks to the Montreal Convention, you can claim financial damages in the event of loss or damage to luggage. The main thing is to get the Certificate of Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before you leave the airport.
