Since 2014 Kazakhstan has been actively working to change the three-letter code of Nur Sultan airport, assigned by International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Despite IATA principles of  assigning a code to airports around the world on a single occasion and on for good, the Kazakh side managed to achieve positive results in this direction.

Together with IATA representatives, it was decided to amend the IATA’s approache for assigning and changing airport codes.

These changes were supported on October 14, 2019 in Warsaw (Poland) at IATA Passenger Standards Meeting with all IATA members.

As a result, starting from June 8, 2020, a new NQZ code was assigned to Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport, which will be displayed in all booking systems, boarding passes, luggage tags and information desks.
