Kazakhstan actively participates on the impact of aviation on global warming

12/10/2022

ICAO has decided to place significant emphasis on sustainable development in the area of environmental protection and climate change from the effects of international aviation. As it is well known, Kazakhstan was the first country to announce its voluntary participation in the Carbon Offset and Reduction System of International Aviation CORSIA. Beginning from 2020, Kazakhstan provides reports on the amount of CO2 emissions from Kazakh airlines operating international flights. It is worth noting that airlines voluntarily participate in the state's initiative to monitor the amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
During a meeting with the President of ICAO, Salvatore Sciacchitano, on the sidelines of the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada, representatives of the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan discussed climate change and the sustainable development of Kazakhstan's aviation industry.
The President supported Kazakhstan's voluntary entry into the CORSIA program, and also noted the country's potential in the development of Low carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) and Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), where the main instrument for reducing global warming is the transition to SAF and LCAF.
Earlier in July 2022, ICAO hosted a High-Level Meeting on the Long-Term aspirational Goal on Climate Change (LTAG) at ICAO HQ. Delegates from 193 countries, as well as Kazakhstan, gathered in the Assembly Hall to adopt a paper on the feasibility of a long-term aspirational goal for reducing international aviation's CO2 emissions.
Kazakhstan supported the idea of using as a starting point for the desired goal, the level of global carbon emissions in 2019 of further evaluation of the reduction of CO2 emissions. As a result of the meeting was issued document 10178 HLM-LTAG.
During the Assembly, Kazakhstan supported Working Paper 369 prepared by ICAO on the basis of Document 10178 and the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which contains principles for the development and implementation of market-based measures for international aviation.
The main idea of the document is the voluntary transfer of technology, especially to developing countries and states with special needs, so that they can adapt to advanced technologies and increase their contribution to the LTAG and the “No Country Left Behind” initiative in relation to developing countries and states with special needs greater access to opportunities for private investment, as well as funding from financial institutions, such as development banks, to implement projects that will contribute.
