International cooperation is the key to success in the development of ICAO documents

14/11/2022

From November 8 to 10, 2022, a meeting of the ICAO - WHMEG (Wildlife Hazard Management Expert Group) was held to revise the Manual on the ICAO bird strike information system (IBIS), ICAO DOC 9332 -AN/909. This document was last modified in 1989 and is significantly outdated. According to the requirements of Annex 14 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, all ICAO member states must report information on bird strikes that occurred on the territory of the State to the International Civil Aviation Organization, which in turn generates reports on wildlife hazards to civil aviation. It is planned to complete the work on the revision of ICAO Doc 9332-AN/909 by the end of 2023. The new edition will include sections on a collection of information on bird strikes by States from civil aviation organizations, requirements for data format, quality control of this data, conducting an annual analysis by States, the procedure for submitting data to ICAO and the preparation of ICAO analyses. In addition, the new edition will include issues of determining bird species using modern methods, including DNA analysis. The expert group consists of representatives of the civil aviation authorities of the USA, Canada, Australia, France, and Spain, and WHM experts of Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany.
