Bird strikes require urgent action

12/09/2022

Recently, bird strikes have become more frequent, causing airlines to incur costs associated with aircraft repairs and flight delays.

According to the Law “On the Use of the Airspace of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Aviation Activities”, ornithological flight support refers to activities subject to control and supervision to ensure flight safety by the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan. Thus, the administration, together with the Civil Aviation Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, organized an operational meeting, during which the issue of collision of aircraft with birds was discussed. The meeting was attended by akimats of Almaty, Almaty region, representatives of domestic airlines and the airport of Almaty.

According to the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, this year 46 cases of aircraft collisions with birds were registered in the area of responsibility of the airports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In terms of regions, the most unfavorable ornithological situation is observed at the Almaty airport.

According to experts, bird strikes are seasonal in nature, due to the migratory activity of birds in spring and autumn, as well as activity in the warm season. Every year, the maximum number of collisions occurs in July or August.

It is impossible to completely eliminate the collision of birds, but this risk can be minimized, according to the administration. When conducting certification surveys and inspections, the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan checks airports to ensure that airport operators comply with the requirements of national legislation. In particular, scaring away birds using pyrotechnics, gas guns, bioacoustic devices, lasers and other means, as well as notifying air traffic controllers of bird flights.

Following the meeting, representatives of local executive bodies expressed their readiness to assist in solving the problems voiced and promptly establish cooperation with the airport.

“Work is underway in this direction. At the same time, the lack of appropriate funding from the budget is a deterrent to the elimination of illegal objects,” the Almaty akimat noted.

It is also recommended to speed up work on the elimination of illegal objects that attract birds in the area of airports and increase funding for these purposes.

The matter is under the control of the department.
