Aviation inspectors of the AAК Aviation Medicine Department participated in the Seminar "Methods of Assessment, Treatment and Safety Management of Mental Health of Aviation Personnel" in Chisinau, Moldova.
Civil aviation is one of the most dynamically developing sectors - It stimulates the growth of the world economy through innovation, manpower development and rate of technological advancement.
When speaking about the industry’s most valuable resource - aviation personnel, special attention should be paid to their physical and mental condition. Wherein the aspect of mental fitness is not given the same consideration as the aspect of physical fitness. To address this issue, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Republic of Moldova has organized a seminar on the mental health of aviation personnel.
The seminar was intended for the target audience ofdoctors and psychologists who are involved in the regulation, control and supervision of aviation medical certification, medical examination of pilots and air traffic controllers, as well as specialists of the peer support programme of the regions.
The aim of the workshop was to share knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems and disorders among aviation personnel in different parts of the world with aim to facilitateflight safety.
It was also recognized that special attention and support is now needed for flight crew members who operate in conflict zones under severe stress. Aeromedical experts in our region need knowledge and advice on dealing with mental health problems now more than ever before.
Experts from the European Aviation Safety Agency's MeSafe project presented research that has been carried out on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders that may pose a threat to flight safety and therefore lead to pilot and air traffic control officer unfitness.
At the end of the presentations, the assessment, treatment, and safety management of mental health issues in aviation personnel were discussed. A number of measures were proposed to supplement and amend ICAO regulations related to the mental health of aviation personnel.
Certificates were issued to the participants at the end of the seminar.
